The Rafu Shimpo has been a cornerstone of the Japanese American community since 1903, providing news, stories, and insights that matter to our readers. We strive to celebrate heritage while addressing the current events and issues impacting the Japanese American and broader Asian American communities.

Job Summary: We are looking for a talented to join our production team. The Page Designer will be responsible for arranging stories, photos, and graphics to create a clean, engaging, and effective newspaper layout. This role requires a keen eye for design, strong technical skills, and the ability to work under tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities:

• Page Layout: Design and organize newspaper pages for print and digital, ensuring each page is clear, visually appealing, and easy to read.
• Marketing Graphic Design: Design marketing material, advertisements, and flyers
• Collaboration: Work closely with editors, photographers, and graphic artists to create layouts that enhance storytelling and meet editorial standards.
• Content Placement: Ensure efficient and logical placement of headlines, articles, photos, captions, and graphics.
• Quality Assurance: Review layouts to catch any design inconsistencies, typos, or errors before publication.
• Software Use: Utilize design software, particularly Adobe InDesign Japanese, along with other tools (e.g., Photoshop) to produce high-quality layouts
• Organization: Maintain an organized system of digital files and ad insertions
• Special Projects: Assistance with projects and campaigns as needed

Required Qualifications:

• Native or near-native written and verbal Japanese proficiency; basic written and verbal English
• 1-2 years of experience in page layout or graphic design, preferably in a newspaper, magazine, or related field.
• Strong proficiency in Adobe InDesign and Photoshop, with a solid understanding of print and digital production processes.
• Excellent eye for layout precision, typographic consistency, and overall quality.
• Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, deadline-driven environment.
• Flexible and capable of handling last-minute changes and quick turnarounds.
• Ability to work both independently and in a team; to work professionally and effectively with colleagues and supervisors
• Computer literacy and Google Suite proficiency
